It is used to everything from carseats, couches, belts, bags, shoes and clothes. Chrom is a heavy metal that makes the leather soft but most importantly it tannes the leather in just a few hours. Chrome tanning was invented during the industrialism when the demand on leather was so high that a three week tanning process was to long. Vegetable tanning is a natural way of conserving the leather that has been used for thousands of years. In stead of using metals bark from trees and fibers from the plants is used to tann the leather. In this way you preserv the natural life in the leather. Then what is the difference? A chrome tanned leather is fast and cheap to produce. But in the process, you get a leather that can cause both allergies and cancer, for both you and your dog. Vegetable tanned leather is free from toxins but takes longer to produce which makes it a bit more expensive.
